285 – Math, or the lack thereof

Well, I am off Monday, but I wanted to post an update.

Thanksgiving went perfectly, with an outstanding 19.5 pound turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing (some call it dressing), corn, turnips and all the little things like black olives and cranberry sauce. Everyone had a fantastic time, the food was the best we’ve ever had, the turkey was incredibly juicy.. it was great.

I was having some work done on my house, so I was pretty much at home on Friday and Saturday. Sunday, my daughter ran some errands then went to Pier 1 Imports where my daughter bought a small, rattan foot stool to go with a chair she has, and the padded pillow for it. We were told, there were 20% off on each piece, so when we got to the register, the girl had no idea how to figure 20% off it seems. Sure enough, her math was wrong even though we told her it was. When we got home, I took out the sales flyer from there, which had the correct price in it, and sure enough, the girl was wrong. We went back, and while my daughter (the Masters Degreed Math teacher) explained that they owed her money, the managers calculator kept coming up with a different number, and my daughter got steamed when she figured out their calculator always rounded up in their favor.  This is just one small example of how people can’t do simple math anymore. I see it myself all the time when people go to give me change.

Now, on to something fun:

The American Film Institute's top 100 movie quotes, all said in a video. (this is incredible) Be sure to check below the video for the names of all the movies.

Well, that’s it for now.. have a wonderful Monday!

284 – Happy Thanksgiving!

Well, it’s that time of year once again where we give thanks for what we have in our lives. Friends, Family, and all else we’re thankful for.

I have so much to be thankful for… my whole family, having a good job, everything that makes me happy. I hope you’re all as thankful for what you have as I am.

We’re having the whole family over at our house as usual this year, and it’s always nice. The smell of turkey throughout the house, the smiles and laughter… we should have Thanksgiving every week at least out of the year! *chuckling*

With that said, I’m off on Friday and Monday, so I’m not sure if there will be a blog post on those days.

Oh, if you ever wanted to know the history of "Black Friday", read it here!

And now, something to make you chuckle:

From my good friend michelle:

The Bus

A lady about 8 months pregnant got on a bus. She noticed the man opposite her wassmiling at her. She immediately moved to another seat.

This time the smile turnedinto a grin, so she moved again. The man seemed more amused.

When on the fourth move, the man burst out laughing, She complained to the driver and he had the man arrested. The case came up in court.

The judge asked the man (about 20 years old) What he had to say for himself.

The man replied, 'Well your Honor, it was like this: When the lady got on the bus, Icouldn't help but notice her condition. She sat down under a sign that said, 'TheDouble Mint Twins are coming' and I grinned. Then she moved and sat under a signthat said, ' Logan 's Liniment will reduce the swelling,' and I had to smile. Thenshe placed herself under a deodorant sign that said, 'William's Big Stick Did theTrick,' and I could hardly contain myself. But, Your Honor, when she moved thefourth time And sat under a sign that said, 'Goodyear Rubber could have preventedthis Accident!' ... I just lost it.''CASE DISMISSED!!'

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!!!!

283 – Let The Shopping… BEGIN!

Yeah, this is the week that most people go crazy on “Black Friday” and shop from the wee hours in the morning till they either drop, or run out of money. My daughter has been known to go out on this day shopping, but I try my best to not have to go shopping. There’s no parking, the people tend to be a bit more rude (maybe from getting up so early?), and the lines a lot longer, all to save $1.99 on something.

This past weekend was supposed to be gorgeous out, weather wise, so I had called my insurance company to ask just what it would take to put the Vette back on for just two days. The answer was I’d have to come down and fill out paperwork… and I said, nah, never mind but thanks.

I got a phone call back less than 30 seconds later saying my Vette WAS still insured, as I had failed to mail back a form that I had to sign to take it off. I found the paper, signed it… and told them I’d bring it by on Monday. So, Saturday, I took the Vette out for a nice long ride up to meet a bunch of friends for breakfast from my former work place. Driving there, I was early, and saw one of my favorite places to take pictures of it, Satan’s Kingdom, so I pulled in and snapped a few shots.

282 – Here Come the Holidays…

It seems like only a week ago that we started the Spring and I was counting the days to taking the Vette out, and it’s already the holiday season. I’ve already started my Christmas Shopping, and snow can’t be too far away.

As usual, next week we’ll be having Thanksgiving at our house, with the whole family being there (with the exception of maybe my brother-in-law, who has H1N1 flu right now). It’s a busy day, but it’s nice to have all the family together.

More holiday shopping this weekend, trying to get it all done early this year, and I can sit back and watch everyone else chase the bargains.

On to something to make you smile:

To paraphrase W.C. Fields, "I don't drink water, because fish screw in it."

To my friends who enjoy a glass of wine... and those who don't...As Ben Franklin said: In wine there is wisdom,In beer there is freedom, in water there is bacteria.

In a number of carefully controlled trials, scientists have demonstratedthat if we drink 1 liter of water each day, at the end of the year we wouldhave absorbed more than 1 kilo of Escherichia coli, (E. coli) - bacteriafound in feces. In other words, we are consuming 1 kilo of poop..

However, we do NOT run that risk when drinking wine & beer (or tequila, rum, whiskey or other liquor) because alcohol has to go through a purification process of boiling, filtering and/or fermenting.

Remember: Water = Poop,  Wine = Health

Therefore, it's better to drink wine and talk stupid, than to drink water and be full of shit. There is no need to thank me for this valuable information: I'm doing it as a public service!

Have a Wonderful Weekend All!

280 – True Stories…

I had received an email with the story below a few times, and always thought it was just an internet rumor, but then I looked it up on snopes.com.

Read for yourself:

The Littlest Firefighter

The 26-year-old mother stared down at her son who was dying of terminal leukemia. Although her heart was filled with sadness, she also had a strong feeling of determination. Like any parent she wanted her son to grow up and fulfill all his dreams. Now that was no longer possible.
The leukemia would see to that. But she still wanted her son's dreams to come true. She took her son's hand and asked, "Billy, did you ever think about what you wanted to be once you grew up? Did you ever dream and wish what you would do with your life?"

"Mommy, I always wanted to be a fireman when I grew up." Mom smiled back and said, "Let's see if we can make your wish come true."

Later that day she went to her local fire department in Phoenix, Arizona, where she met Fireman Bob, who had a heart as big as Phoenix. She explained her son's final wish and asked if it might be possible to give her six year old son a ride around the block on a fire engine.

Fireman Bob said, "Look, we can do better than that.
If you'll have yourson ready at seven o'clock Wednesday morning, we'll make him an
honorary fireman for the whole day. He can come down to the fire station, eat with us, go out on all the fire calls, the whole nine yards!
"And if you'll give us his sizes, we'll get a real fire uniform for him, with a real fire hat-not a toy one-with the emblem of the Phoenix Fire Department on it, a yellow slicker like we wear and rubber boots. They're all manufactured right here in Phoenix, so we can get them fast."

Three days later Fireman Bob picked up Billy, dressed him in his fire uniform and escorted him from his hospital bed to the waiting hook and ladder truck. Billy got to sit on the back of the truck and help steer it back to the fire station. He was in heaven. There were three fire calls in Phoenix that day and Billy got to go out on all three calls.
He rode in the different fire engines, the paramedic's van, and even the fire chief's car. He was also videotaped for the local news program.

Having his dream come true, with all the love and attention that was lavished upon him, so deeply touched Billy that he lived three months longer than any doctor thought possible.

One night all of his vital signs began to drop dramatically and the head nurse, who believed in the hospice concept that no one should die alone, began to call the family members to the hospital.

Then she remembered the day Billy had spent as a fireman, so she called the Fire Chief and asked if it would be possible to send a fireman in uniform to the hospital to be with Billy as he made his transition.

The chief replied, "We can do better than that. We'll be there in five minutes. Will you please do me a favor? When you hear the sirens screaming and see the lights flashing, will you announce over the PA system that there is not a fire? It's just the fire department coming to see one of its finest members one more time. And will you open the window to his room? About five minutes later a hook and ladder truck arrived at the hospital, extended its ladder up to Billy's third floor open window and 16 firefighters climbed up the ladder into Billy's room. With his mother's permission, they hugged him and held him and told him how much they loved him.

With his dying breath, Billy looked up at the fire chief and said,
"Chief, am I really a fireman now?"

" Billy, you are," the chief said. With those words, Billy smiled and
closed his eyes one last time.

But that’s not, “The end of the story”. This, is what’s normally left out of this true story:

In 1981, Frank "Bopsy" Salazar, a 7-year-old dying of leukemia, became the first "wish child" helped by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. This boy from Phoenix had three wishes: to be a fireman, to ride in a hot air balloon, and to go to Disneyland. He ultimately achieved all three; the fulfillment of his first wish, the fireman one, was described by the Make-A-Wish Foundation in their account of events:

The Phoenix Fire Department made sure Bopsy had an experience truly befitting a fireman; making him the first honorary fireman in Phoenix history. A full uniform, complete with a yellow coat and a helmet, was custom made just for him. Bopsy scrambled around the back of Engine 9's ladder truck, and turned on the horn. Following the ride, he doused a few cars with water from a 75-pound hose. At the end of the day, Bopsy was pinned with an official firefighter’s badge.

Bopsy went on to experience his hot-air balloon ride and a trip to Disneyland. While in Anaheim, he was treated with every courtesy a visiting fireman could wish for from his Southern California colleagues, including being chauffeured to and from the Los Angeles airport in a fire truck and escorted around the park by two of his fellow firefighters from the Anaheim fire department.

As for the more fantastic claim made in the e-mail; that Phoenix fireman climbed through the child's hospital window on the night Bopsy died; this too holds true. It was only five firemen instead of the sixteen of the email version, but they did indeed park the hook and ladder below his window, then climb up the ladder and into his room:
Bopsy's condition worsened not long after returning from California, and he had to return to the hospital. As he slept in his third floor room, someone suddenly knocked on his window and opened it, and in came five of his fellow Phoenix firemen. They had parked their ladder truck below. As his colleagues continued to crawl through the window, Bopsy; now fully awake; could not contain his laughter. Bopsy shared a few laughs and stories with his friends before going back to sleep, with a smile on his face. Later that evening, Bopsy passed away; but not before seeing all three of his fondest wishes come true.

Hope you have a wonderful Monday all…. *S*

279 – A long time ago…

I was inspired by Mark’s blog to talk about another of things we have in common. He was once a teacher, and so was I.

It was actually very early on, I had gone from owning a Commodore VIC-20 to a Commodore 64, and saw in the local paper, that one town over, there was an adult education class on the Commodore 64. Some of you may remember, this is where I met my friend Kevin that passed away a couple of years ago. Kevin was the teacher, and after a few classes, we both realized that I knew as much as he did, and that I should teach a class as they had many people they were turning away due to lack of teachers.

I began teaching the Commodore 64, then a year or so later, moved on up to Intro to DOS, Multimate Word Processing, and basic file management.

From there, I began teaching Microsoft Windows 3.1, then Windows 95, then the early versions of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Powerpoint). Then, a class that had a bit of everything, called PC Technologies. I taught for 13 years, with my wife becoming a teacher for a while too. It was easy money, and only one night a week and honestly, it was a lot of fun.

Most of the people taking the courses were older, whose kids had computers and the parents didn’t have a clue what they were or how they worked. They seemed to leave having a much better understanding of the terminology, and how to use the PC. I’m sure, many of their kids at some point, got worried that their parents started to know “too much” about their computers now! *LOL*

I look back now, and think of just how antiquated DOS was, and Multimate, that was formerly the WANG word processor.

And now, something for Mark:

25 of the hottest sci-fi cover girls and guys!

And now, a funny:

A blonde gets an opportunity to fly to a nearby country. She has never been on an airplane anywhere and was very excited and tense. As soon as she boarded the plane, a Boeing747, she started jumping in excitement, running over seat to seat and starts shouting, "BOEING! BOEING!! BOEING!!! BO....."
She sort of forgets where she is, even the pilot in the cock-pit hears the noise. Annoyed by the goings on, the Pilot comes out and shouts "Be silent!"
There was pin-drop silence everywhere and everybody is looking at the blonde and the angry Pilot. She stared at the pilot in silence for a moment, concentrated really hard, and all of a sudden started shouting, "OEING! OEING! OEING! OE...."

Have a wonderful weekend all..!

278 – A Week to Thank our Veterans

I honestly don’t understand why Veterans day isn’t a whole week. For all they do for us, for all they put on the line, for the price they pay in defense of our freedom, there should be a week at least in their honor.

My dad was a veteran from the Korean War. He never made it out of the states, but he did his part stateside, served his time and was honorably discharged.

My brother served in the National Guard, served his time and was also honorably discharged.

Myself, when I was old enough to enter, the draft had ended, and the sentiments of the Vietnam war was pretty bad. Personally, I didn’t like that we were there, but I sure did support our brave brothers and sisters that did serve. Right or wrong, they were doing what our President told them to do, and they followed orders.

A few years ago, I met some actual World War II veterans at the World War II Museum in New Orleans. After seeing some of the more realistic movies (my favorite being Band of Brothers), I made sure to shake their hands, look them in the eyes and tell them how much they were appreciated.

Our freedom is not free. It is paid for with the blood and lives of our brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, and friends.

Respect and honor the Veterans all week this week, if not all year long.

Have a wonderful Monday…

277 – Hump-Day is my Friday

Yep, I’m going to be off the next two days, doing some much needed work at home.

Oh, I forgot to mention about Halloween… my daughter’s God-Daughter came over with her little brother. She (Olivia) is about 2 and a half, and came as Little Bo Peep. I’ll see if I can find the picture to put here.. and her little brother Ryan was a lost sheep (dressed up in a little sheep outfit!). They were SO adorable…!

I got an email yesterday from an old friend up in Illinois. We met when working for the same company, and I had done a lot of travelling out to Rockford and we became friends instantly. His hobby (at least back then) was clocks, and he was very instrumental in helping me find a new mechanism for a grandfather clock at my house. I do miss him, and wish I had a chance to go out there again. Paul, call me or send me your number.

UCONN Basketball begins tonight with an exhibition game. This is my time of year… as I love NCAA Basketball. It’s funny, but as I get older, I enjoy having something I really look forward to ahead, whether it be basketball season which ends in March, taking the Vette out when begins in April, or vacations.

And now, a funny for you:

One rainy Sunday afternoon, a young couple were on their way to their Church to get married. On the way there, their car lost control and slammed into a telephone pole – killing them both instantly.

The couple soon found themselves standing in front of St. Peter at the Pearly Gates, welcoming them to Heaven. The young woman asks Peter if they could get married in Heaven, since their time on Earth was cut short. He replies that he’ll get back with them on that request.

A month later, St. Peter finds them and announces that they can – in fact – get married in Heaven. To his surprise, the woman asks “Just wondering, if things don’t work out will we be able to get a divorce?”

With a stern look in his eye, Peter blurts out “Look lady, it took me a month to find a preacher up here… you really think I’m gonna find a lawyer?”

Well, I have to run quick today… I’ll try to get here Friday for a post… have a great Wednesday!

276 – Another day….

Another Monday.. and another day closer to winter. The leaves are falling off the trees quickly now, they’re golden, yellow, orange, red… and every color in between. They’re beautiful when they’re on the tree, but a nuisance after they’ve fallen. They make for slippery driving when they’re wet, they’re a pain to bag and have disposed of. But.. that’s the price for living in the North-East I guess.

I have to take Thursday and Friday off of work this week to take care of some stuff at home.. but it won’t be a fun thing.

On Mark’s blog (see link at left), he had me thinking about radio, and how my tastes have changed. I used to listen to top 40 for most of my life, but in the last few years, driving to work I listen to newsradio, both for the news, and local traffic because I spend 2/3 of my ride to work on the highway, and I want to know about any accidents on the way so I can avoid them.

Other than that, when at work, I listen to the “John Boy & Billy Big Show”, something that Mark claims he doesn’t care for any longer, but this particular show always makes me laugh. They’re not mean, they’re a couple of good ole boys (northern transplants to the south) trying to be rednecks.  The John Boy & Billy Big Show has been around for a while, and I first found it when I was on a business trip down South for the last company I worked for. I was laughing so hard listening to them one day, I had to pull off the shoulder to compose myself! They also have a person on the show “Robert D. Raiford”, kind of a Southern Andy Rooney.

Now for some famous quotes:

The very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. Instead of altering their views to fit the facts, they alter the facts to fit their views...which can be very uncomfortable if you happen to be one of the facts that needs altering.
Doctor Who

There's no point in being grown up if you can't be childish sometimes.
Doctor Who

I don't get no respect. I joined Gambler's Anonymous. They gave me two to one I don't make it.
Rodney Dangerfield (as are all the rest)

I tell ya, blind dates never work out. I had a blind date. The girl, she showed up, she was pregnant. What do ya say to a girl that's pregnant?

What have you been doing lately? And she told me she had a fight with her boyfriend. I said, "Look, you tell your boyfriend next time you fight, he should knock you down."

I tell ya, with my wife I got no sex life. Just when I get going, she wakes up.

I tell ya, my wife, she likes to talk during sex. The other night she called me from a motel.

I tell ya, I come from a tough neighborhood. Why, just last week some guy pulled a knife on me. I could see it wasn't a real professional job.
There was butter on it.

I get no respect. I was crossing the street. I got hit by a mobile library. I was lying there in pain, screaming. The guy looked at me. He went, "Shhhh."

I tell ya, I'm not a sexy guy. I was with one girl, I said to her, "Come on honey, I'll show ya where it's at." She said, "You'd better, 'cause the last time I couldn't find it."

Last Christmas I got no respect. I gave my kid a BB gun. He gave me a sweatshirt with a bullseye in the back!

Oh, I was an ugly kid. My old man took me to the zoo. They thanked him for returning me.

I tell ya, a lot of people are in bad shape. A guy stopped me in the street the other day. He told me he hasn't eaten in five days. I told him, I said, "I wish I had your will power."

Anyways, with that I do have to run… but have a wonderful Monday all..!
