308 – Another Cold Friday
Well, we went from in the 50’s over last weekend, to around 11 degrees this morning with a wind-chill of about –4 because of the winds.
Yesterday, we were supposed to get some “snow squalls”, but they added up to 2-3 inches of snow! Let me tell you, the roads were slippery yesterday, but hey, this is after all, New England.
Well, the new patio doors are almost finished in my house.. I’ll have to post some pictures when they’re done, but I absolutely LOVE them!
So what does everyone think of the new iPad? Me, I think it’s brilliant. The downside is that many now free online newspapers will now start charging for content. All I have to say is, if you’re going to charge for content, don’t show me any ads.
BTW Mark, that picture wasn’t stitched together. It came from Google Maps Street View!

VATICAN HUMOR
After getting all of Pope Benedict's luggage loaded into the limo, (and he doesn't travel light), the driver notices the Pope is still standing on the curb.
'Excuse me, Your Holiness,' says the driver, 'Would you please take your seat so we can leave?'
'Well, to tell you the truth,' says the Pope, 'they never let me drive at the Vatican when I was a cardinal, and I'd really like to drive today.'
'I'm sorry, Your Holiness, but I cannot let you do that. I'd lose my job!
What if something should happen?' protests the driver, wishing he'd never gone to work that morning..
'Who's going to tell?' says the Pope with a smile.
Reluctantly, the driver gets in the back as the Pope climbs in behind the wheel. The driver quickly regrets his decision when, after exiting the airport, the Pontiff floors it, accelerating the limo to 205 kms.. (Remember, the Pope is German..)
'Please slow down, Your Holiness!' pleads the worried driver, but the Pope keeps the pedal to the metal until they hear sirens.
'Oh, dear God, I'm going to lose my license -- and my job!' moans the driver.
The Pope pulls over and rolls down the window as the cop approaches, but the
cop takes one look at him, goes back to his motorcycle, and gets on the radio.
'I need to talk to the Chief,' he says to the dispatcher.
The Chief gets on the radio and the cop tells him that he's stopped a limo going 205 kph.
'So bust him,' says the Chief.
'I don't think we want to do that, he's really important,' said the cop.
The Chief exclaimed,' All the more reason!'
'No, I mean really important,' said the cop with a bit of persistence.
The Chief then asked, 'Who do you have there, the mayor?'
Cop: 'Bigger.'
Chief: ' A senator?' Cop: 'Bigger.'
Chief: 'The Prime Minister?'
Cop: 'Bigger.'
'Well,' said the Chief, 'who is it?'
Cop: 'I think it's God!'
The Chief is even more puzzled and curious, 'What makes you think it's God?'
Cop: 'His chauffeur is the Pope!'

The iPad is interesting, but it has no USB ports or card readers. To me both are glaring omissions. One can buy the "Camera Accessory Pack" that allows getting pictures from a camera into the iPad. I could maybe understand this if the iPad at least had a built-in camera. But, it limits other uses for ports and readers, too (like, moving files back and forth between devices without being online). Oh, and there's no optical drive.
As one tech site put it, "seems like this was design by committee" done while Jobs was out sick. Not saying he designs everything, but surely he would have noticed the problems.
I think it boils down to this: Apple is and always will be about appealing to the simplest of technology users. It's easier for the average consumer to buy all their content from iTunes than it is for them to rip their own CD's, movies, etc. to a device and use it however they want.
Plus, it makes Apple and the media distribution companies more money, so, win-win, right?
I guess I just expect a device that costs $499 to do much, much more, and to allow me a little more freedom technologically.
There are large-format Windows-based devices available that have touch-screen interfaces. Apple is not the only game in town for that.
On the other hand, my Netbook has no optical drive, and it hasn't hindered me one iota.
An optical drive is large, heavy and seldom used in a device like this, however I do wish it had USB ports.
Well I can brag it's colder in MI but I won't cause I wish it wasn't! Can't wait to see pictures of the new patio door.
About the iPad, well I was all excited about it until I started reading what it can't do! Mark stated the 2 obvious ones. What the hell were they thinking? Though I love my iPhone you will not find me buying the iPad.
